The Unheard Voices of the German Coast Tour - created by Dianne Gumbo Marie Honore and presented by Destrehan Plantation

Stand under ancient live oaks, dripping with Spanish Moss, and hear moving stories of the marginalized people who took there before you–enslaved Africans, Native Americans, German farmers, and Acadians (Cajuns). This multifaceted, multi-sensory historical tour was created and is hosted by Dianne "Gumbo Marie" Honore, a descendant of Jean Baptiste Destrehan, the father of the original owner of Destrehan Plantation, and an enslaved African negress named Genevieve Bienville. This promises to be the highlight of your Louisiana vacation.

On this tour you will:

  • Walk the grounds where hospitals run by enslaved women, a cooper shop, a blacksmith shop, a dry-goods store and brutal sugar cane fields once stood
  • View the main house with an emphasis on the 1811 Slave Revolt and tribunal held on the gallery of the plantation home
  • See the wash shed where enslaved prisoners were kept
  • Walk under the old oaks and learn the history of the enslaved gardens and religious acts in the region
  • Learn the French Creole system of slavery

Demonstrations happen along the way and can include:

  • Gris gris making
  • Medicine in the 1800s from native Americans and voodoo healers
  • 1800s slave garments
  • Gumbo making and cooking
  • Tignon tying, hairstyles and hats
